Antonia was first found in 2013, but not weighed until 2015, when the Teacher Turtles project got underway. Actually, calling Antonia a “she” isn’t quite accurate, because we won’t know if it’s a boy or a girl for several more years. We’re pretty sure about it that Antonia hatched in our courtyard, since she was very small when found, and baby turtles aren’t usually caught or kept as pets (they tend to be very fragile). During the 2015-2016 winter, Antonia made it through her first hibernation outdoors.
According to several different methods of analyzing Antonia’s genetic data, it appears to be the offspring of Mr. Putty and Pickle. To be sure, you can test other turtles in the project below, and see if any mothers or fathers might make a better match.
