Onezie is a smaller juvenile, yet too big to still be considered a hatchling. It was first photographed in 2013, but doesn’t show up very often; one of the greatest mysteries of the turtles in our courtyard is where some of them hide most of the time.
Please play the game below to match up Onezie’s microsatellites and see who its parents might be. Be sure to check several different females and males, so that we can confirm and eliminate possibilities based on how microsatellites match (or don’t). Oh, and if you aren’t sure what microsatellites are, click here.
Be careful to read the turtle’s questions before you answer each time, because you will get a false mismatch if you answer incorrectly. Not matching is okay, as long as you put in the right number, because we can’t have every young turtle matching with every adult. If we did, we’d never figure out who the parents are! When you have completed this activity with several different turtles as possible “moms” and “dads,” please enter your results below.
Thank you for helping!
