Opportunity has definitely grown since first being photographed as a juvenile in June of 2013 (picture above), but still remains a juvenile. We have found this one burrowing in leaves, so perhaps this is where it likes to hide. Piles of branches and leaves make great turtle shelters, so we shouldn’t be clearing away all of the leaves and branches in backyards and parks!
Please play the game below to match up Opportunity’s microsatellites and see who its parents might be, and check several different females and males to be sure. Oh, and if you aren’t sure what microsatellites are, click here.
Please be careful to read the turtle’s questions before you answer, because you’ll get a false mismatch if you answer incorrectly. Not matching is perfectly fine, as long as you put in the right number, because we can’t have every young turtle matching with every adult. If we did, we’d never figure out who the parents are! When you have tried several different turtles as possible parents, please enter your results below.
Thank you for helping!
